"Katazome-shi" literally means stencil-dyed (katazome)papers (-shi). Developed during the 20th century in Kyoto, based on traditional kimono printing techniques, Katazome-shi was being made up until recently. These richly colored papers are printed by hand, one color at a time, using persimmon-dyed kozo as the stencils, and aided by paste and "Gojiru" (soy bean juice), the pigments absorb deeply into the paper to produce long-lasting color. Every sheet is a work of handmade art; essentially katazome-shi is a form of printmaking by hand. These sheets can be used for all paper arts- or simply frame them as finished artwork! Sadly, the remaining studio in Japan that made it is now closed. That makes our remaining stock even more precious!
